Combating Mental Health Stigma: A Video Series

Medical training is incredibly demanding, with medical learners experiencing higher rates of distress than the general population. Historically, however, medical trainees haven’t sought out mental health services. While there are probably as many mental health stories as there are physicians, concerns about stigma contribute to the reluctance to seek help.

The Department of Mental Health Services asked six Indiana University School of Medicine physicians to candidly share their stories of caring for their own mental health. The resulting video series explores their experiences with sleep deprivation and mental distress, postpartum depression and anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, mood and alcohol-use disorder, feelings of not belonging, and mood distress and suicidality — and the impact and importance of taking steps to get well.

A scientific approach to evaluating our commitment to well-being

Indiana University School of Medicine is committed to supporting a culture of wellness and engagement.

One of the most significant efforts toward supporting the culture of wellness across both IU School of Medicine and IU Health is our joint investment in institutional membership of the Healthcare Professional Well-Being Academic Consortium (PWAC). The organization focuses on validated measurement of well-being outcomes and determinants and offers members access to a growing benchmarking database that is powered by nationwide member-administration of the core PWAC survey.

The Indiana University institutional survey

All attending physicians, clinical faculty, resident/fellow trainees and advanced practice providers employed by IU Health and IU School of Medicine were asked to participate in a well-being survey between Nov. 29, 2022, and Jan. 10, 2023. A non-clinical version of the survey was administered to faculty scientists, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students in spring 2023. An executive summary of findings from our first series of PWAC survey administrations is available now.
