description: | The caption written on the reverse side of this image reads, in full: "Ex-President B. Harrison addressing a Bloomington audience. Campaign of 1896." The view is from the west looking east. Harrison is speaking on the south side of the Model Roller Mills building (of W.P. Dill and Bridwell). See also image P0034629. From the Bloomington Republican Progress of October 13, 1896, in full: "On Wednesday, the 21st, Gen. Harrison will speak to the people a few minutes as his special train passes through the town." From the Bloomington Republican Progress of October 20, 1896, in full: "Gen. Harrison and party will arrive here next Wednesday at 3:30 o'clock, and will stop north of the 5th street crossing, so that the speaker can speak to the crowd, facing south. There will be no introduction or any time [for] in formalities. but so soon as the rain stops the General will step onto the platform and commence speaking. The train is scheduled here for 35 minutes and the next stop will be at Gosport. The National Republican committee has the whole matter in charge." From the Bloomington Telephone of October 20, 1896, in full: "Committee to Meet Gen. Harrison. Details are being arranged by Chairman W.F. Browning for a great day here next Wednesday to honor of the coming of ex-President Harrison and it is now estimated that 5,000 people will be in town to hear him speak from his special train. Chairman Browning has appointed Senator H.C. Duncan, Maj. J.B. Mulky, Mayor L. V. Buskirk, Prof. W.P. Rogers, James D. Showers, Walter Bradfute and Joseph G. McPheeters as a reception committee to meet Gen. Harrison at Bedford and accompany him to Bloomington." From the Bloomington Weekly Star of October 24, 1896, in full: "A Big Crowd Hears Harrison. - Gen Harrison made a thirty-minute speech in this city Wednesday at 3:30 o'clock. He was greeted with a non-partisan crowd of about three thousand people. The city was gaily decorated, but there was an absence of olt-time Republican enthusiasm." From the Bloomington Republican Progress of October 27, 1896, in full: "The people of Bloomington, and of Monroe county, were happy to be able to greet Ex-President Harrison on Wednesday last. The people generally have confidence in Harrison, and have not forgotten his successful, clean administration." NOTE: The Bloomington Telephone of October 23, 1896 contains a transcription of Harrison's speech. A copy of this transcription can be found in the IU Archives' biographical file on Harrison. |
